Madrid has given me plenty of things to discover, but this food story takes us a little farther away—all the way to Surigao del Sur, Philippines.
We had come to Marihatag to visit our friends and hosts, Tito Gerry and Gran, and celebrate the town fiesta the following day. Before the festivities, they took us island hopping around the beautiful Britania Group of Islands in neighboring San Agustin.
Beautiful water, little islands, good company—and a seafood spread I wasn’t quite prepared for.
Raw seafood. Lots of it.Marisco crudo. Y mucho.

A little hesitation, a big surpriseUn poco de duda, una gran sorpresa
Sea urchins, sea grapes, freshly opened shellfish, and a few things I couldn’t even name. Add vinegar, chilies, and lemon, and suddenly I was facing a very different kind of food adventure.
I’ll admit it: I was hesitant. There’s something about seafood coming straight out of a shell that makes you think twice when you’re not used to eating it raw.
But curiosity won. And to my surprise? I actually liked it! The sharp, spicy, citrusy dipping mixture made everything even more interesting. Well… almost everything. 😁

The freshly opened shellfish was the unexpected winner. I can still remember that first taste.
What I can’t remember is what it was called. Hahaha! If you recognize it from the photo, perhaps you can solve that mystery for me.Lo que no recuerdo es cómo se llamaba. ¡Jajaja!
Not everything was love at first biteNo todo fue amor al primer bocado
Let’s talk about the sea grapes. Those tiny green beads looked fascinating, and of course I had to try them.
I can see why some people enjoy them, but they weren’t really my thing. No dramatic food review here—just an honest “maybe not for me.” 🤣
There were also bananas at the table, and enough different shells to keep me wondering what I’d just eaten.

The adventure before the fiestaLa aventura antes de la fiesta
There’s actually a lovely backstory to this meal. Our friends Tito Gerry and Gran are from Marihatag and were hosting us during our visit for the town fiesta. The day before the celebrations, they took us island hopping around the Britania Group of Islands in nearby San Agustin.
And what a way to begin the visit! White sand, bright blue water, a boat ride between islands, unfamiliar seafood, and the kind of company that makes everything more memorable.¡Y qué manera de empezar la visita!

Curiosity is wonderful, but raw seafood calls for caution. Choose reputable providers, pay attention to hygiene and proper refrigeration, and remember that seafood can carry harmful germs even if it looks and smells fresh.
Vinegar, lemon, and chilies add flavor, but they do not make raw seafood safe. Thorough cooking is the safer choice, especially for pregnant travelers, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems or certain underlying conditions. Read more in the CDC’s food and water safety guidance.
